I've loved almost everything Devin has put out for as long as I can remember, and I have a ton of respect for how he makes what wants to make, not necessarily what other people want. That said, I was disappointed by his last album Transcendence (Devin Townsend Project). I don't completely hate the style of that album, but I just don't think it's interesting enough for an entire album. Empath has 1-2 songs of that style which I think is perfect. This album is kind of a mess on its face, but it works. Devin Townsend is probably the only person who can pull this off successfully. It pretty much covers every musical style he's ever done. It even surprised me that the song featuring backing vocals by Chad Kroeger is probably the heaviest song on the album. If you've ever liked anything Devin Townsend has done in the past (or never heard him somehow) I'd highly recommend giving this a listen.
